More about the Factor Ostro Gravel
When Factor decided to start work on what would become the Ostro Gravel, its design team didn’t see it as a category-filler, a place to move some units. They saw it for what it was: an opportunity for peerless performance in a fast-moving genre that all but begged for Factor’s ‘win everywhere’ mentality. You can probably guess what came next.
Our Factor gravel bikes buyer’s guide puts the Ostro Gravel side by side with the Aluto and the SARANA.
Ostro Gravel, Aluto or SARANA?
Factor build three gravel bikes, and the honest way to choose is by the riding you actually do:
- Ostro Gravel — the racer. The sharpest and most aero of the three, with a true 45mm of clearance and a position that asks to be used. If your gravel is a race you mean to win, this is it.
- Aluto — the all-rounder. A touch calmer and more comfortable, with in-frame storage and room for 1x or 2x. One bike that does very nearly everything well.
- SARANA — the ultra specialist. 57mm of tire, an optional 30mm suspension fork, and a frame built to keep its manners when you are twelve hours in.
The Ostro Gravel earns its place when speed is the point; it asks for a lower position and offers the least storage in return, which is exactly what a race bike should do. Our Factor gravel bikes buyer’s guide compares all three side by side.
THE FINER DETAILS
REAL-WORLD GRAVEL AERO
As we all know, gravel racing is fast, and these days, aero matters more than ever. Yet, for all that pace, it isn’t as fast as road racing, so the surface calls for a different solution. The Ostro Gravel frame is tuned for typical trail speeds. Like the Ostro VAM’s highly optimized shape, Factor’s design team developed a ‘zoned aero’ strategy for the Ostro Gravel, which focused on the aero properties and potential of the bike’s front end. In particular, the head tube, where an all-new tube shape unlocks significant drag reductions by manipulating the ‘laminar separation bubble’ that occurs near the front of airfoils at lower speeds. It’s aerospace tech, but all you need to know is that aboard the Ostro Gravel, you stand to get to the finish line faster than ever.
ROOM TO MANOUVER
The OSTRO Gravel offers a generous 45mm of tire clearance in both 700c and 650b, giving you the options and possibilities to tackle the toughest routes and events. To be clear, it’s an accurate figure, with 4mm of clearance on either side per ISO standards. You may fill that space with mud, but thanks to the Ostro’s design, it won’t end your race!
