Open UP / UPPER 2.0 Gravel Bike
Explore the hotly anticipated version 2.0 editions of OPEN's seminal UP and same-but-lighter UPPER gravel framesets.
Open UP / UPPER 2.0 Gravel Bike
Ten years after the U.P. redefined what a gravel bike could be, OPEN has introduced the next evolution: the UP 2.0 and its lighter sibling, the UPPER 2.0. Building on the proven performance, market-leading tech and comfort of its first editions, both models refine the ride experience with a host of updates that leave no stone unturned on the trail to gravel bike perfection.

More about the Open UP and UPPER 2.0
The UP 2.0 and UPPER 2.0 carry forward the qualities that made OPEN’s gravel bikes defining in the first place, while refining them for today’s riders. At their core, both frames deliver the balance of light weight, nimble handling, and comfort that allows a rider to move quickly across any surface. Whether the goal is a fast gravel race, a long day linking varied terrain, or keeping pace on a smooth tarmac group ride, these bikes are designed to adapt without compromise.
To go faster and farther requires both efficiency and ease. The new framesets preserve OPEN’s renowned compliance while adding aerodynamic shaping in key areas. The result is reduced drag where it matters most, without sacrificing the ride quality that allows riders to stay comfortably in position for the long haul.
Tire clearance is optimized for 35–46mm, giving the UP 2.0 and UPPER 2.0 a sharp, responsive character across gravel, dirt, and road. For riders seeking the ability to run even larger rubber, the WI.DE. continues to provide that option.
The construction follows OPEN’s full-carbon, closed-shape philosophy: no inserts, no clamp cuts—just continuous fibers for optimal stiffness, strength, and weight savings. Ten frame sizes are available, each with cockpit adjustability that allows stem length to be fine-tuned in 5mm steps up to 15mm.
Manufacturing takes place in Portugal under the principle of "Made in Freedom." For OPEN, cycling represents freedom, and that ethos guides the brand's decisions about where and how to invest in production. But don't take this line as a knock to its former Far-East production center - to OPEN, freedom means closer to home and the latitude to iterate and engage with its manufacturing partner where the brand lives and rides: in Europe.
Finally, the UP and UPPER 2.0 deliver details designed for riders who value time on the bike over time in the workshop. Features such as a UDH hanger, a T47 threaded bottom bracket, and thoughtfully engineered internal routing make setup, adjustments, and servicing straightforward. The result is a frameset ready for performance, built with durability, and prepared for years of worry-free use.
Highlights
- A light, responsive gravel platform designed for speed, efficiency, and versatility—whether racing, long-distance riding, or even fast group rides on tarmac.
- A balance of comfort and low aerodynamic drag, achieved through frame compliance and optimized tube design.
- Tire clearance for 35–46mm, offering precise handling across varied terrain. For larger tires, the OPEN WI.DE. remains the alternative.
- Full-carbon closed-shape design for stiffness, strength, and weight efficiency. Ten frame sizes, each with fine-tuned cockpit adjustability.
- Manufactured in Portugal, with details that emphasize reliability and ease of use—UDH hanger, T47 threaded bottom bracket, and internal routing designed for straightforward maintenance.
Fork Options
- U-Turn Aero: optimized for aerodynamics, with integrated brake caliper and clean lines. Standard on both UP 2.0 and UPPER 2.0.
- U-Turn Adventure: designed for compliance and cargo compatibility. Standard cage mounts and a patent-pending ultralight cargo system make it ideal for longer expeditions. Available from 2026.
Design in Detail
- Deep headtube: shaped for aerodynamic advantage while maintaining comfort.
- Straight chainstays: efficient power transfer with clearance up to 46mm.
- Wire-Stays: bowed seatstays engineered for vibration absorption, now rotated for improved compliance.
- 27.2mm round seatpost: light, comfortable, and broadly compatible, including with droppers and suspension posts.
- Size-specific fork crown: geometry adapted for consistent ride quality across frame sizes.
- T47 bottom bracket: wide, versatile, and compatible with all major crank systems.
- UDH compatibility: universal drivetrain pairing, including SRAM Transmission.
- Rotoblock fender mounts: secure, rattle-free fender attachment.

A CLOSER LOOK

The OPEN B.A.R.
The one-piece bar-stem is reinterpreted in the OPEN B.A.R. It combines a continuous carbon structure with a patented internal clamp system that allows stem length adjustment in 5mm increments—without compromising weight or stiffness. In many cases, adjustments can be made without disconnecting brake hoses. With ten sizes available, a precise fit is always within reach.

Fork Options
Two forks support the UP/UPPER 2.0, each in five sizes: U-Turn Aero: optimized for aerodynamics, with integrated brake caliper and clean lines - standard on both UP 2.0 and UPPER 2.0. And U-Turn Adventure: designed for compliance and cargo compatibility. Standard cage mounts and OPEN's patent-pending ultralight cargo system make it ideal for longer expeditions.

Aero Front, Comfort Center
OPEN prioritizes aerodynamics where they are most effective: at the front of the bike. The headtube, fork, bars, and downtube are refined to reduce drag, while carbon layup and shaping preserve comfort over long rides. Further back, comfort takes precedence. The seat tube, chainstays, and seatstays are shaped to deliver compliance without compromising efficiency. The ultra-thin seatstays also reduce frontal area and are subtly profiled for airflow.
About the brand
Open Bikes
OPEN is a bike industry outlier. Its business model, predicated on the concept of “working hard to stay small”, is 180 away from almost every carbon fiber bike brand, who see bigger as undoubtedly better.
