At some point, at some price, aren't all bicycle wheels the same? Others, perhaps. But not Lightweight. To understand why Lightweight wheels warrant extra attention beyond the melee of the market requires a bit of context. In the bike industry, wheel brands tend to overuse words like performance, quality and control, leaving little left for a company that rolls up with something genuinely different. So when Lightweight talks about why its wheels are so special, the brand risks sounding the same as any other premium wheel brand. Except, it's not. Not even close.
Transcendent Performance
The Lightweight difference distils down to three things that each house a world of complexity and knowledge: design, engineering and materials. Combined and transposed to the road, they imbue a Lightweight wheel with remarkable speed, feel and control. The same words that others use. A very different experience.
Lightweight wheels draw strength from the brand's rim-to-rim monocoque design, engineered for low weight, maximum stiffness, and a remarkable ride that feels beautifully in tune with the surface and the saddle.
Rather than send its designs somewhere in the world only later to receive wheels by the boatload, Lightweight makes everything in-house in Germany, variously by hand and machine, over hours and days, passed from one expert to the next in an unbroken line that transcends specs to create something truly extraordinary.
The engineering required to realize its designs is absurd. Lightweight's sister company makes high-falutin' composite parts for satellites and space stations - that same expertise originated and flows back to Lightweight in a virtuous circle. Which leads to the materials Lightweight uses, fibers that don't exist elsewhere, created to their specifications, driven by their requirements, resulting in a set of bike wheels quite literally made different from anything else on the market.
