About the Allied BC40
Named after the legendary Back 40 trail system that chases the undulations across the east side of Arkansas's Bella Vista, the BC40 is designed and built fittingly in Allied's Bentonville factory. It is a thoroughly modern XC racing mountain bike with the capabilities of an all-day trail machine: 120mm of suspension on a top-of-the-line pedaling platform, backed by progressive geometry that delivers pin-sharp handling and unwavering stability at speed.
The current BC40 is the quiet kind of update we like best. An optimized carbon laminate takes 100 grams out of the frame and adds stiffness rather than trading it away, so the power you put down goes into the ground on the climbs. Co-molded aluminum hardware at the bottom bracket and main pivot eases maintenance and opens up cable access, a bolt-on chainguide adds the last few percent of chain security that racing on rough ground asks for, and the DUET two-piece cockpit gives you one-piece weight — 199 grams for bar and stem together — without giving up adjustability.
An XC Race Bike, All Day?
The BC40 makes a claim that deserves unpacking: a 120mm XC race bike that also wants to be your all-day trail bike. Here is how it earns it:
- The platform pedals first — 120mm of travel tuned for going up as well as down, which is what separates an XC race bike from a trail bike with the same number on the fork.
- Progressive geometry does the descending — pin-sharp handling with stability at speed, so the raceable position does not cost you the fun half of the ride.
- The details are race details — a chainguide for chain security on rough ground, a 199-gram cockpit, and a frame that got lighter and stiffer at the same time.
The honest other side: this is a race platform. The chainring tops out at 34 teeth, the geometry rewards a rider who likes to work, and if your riding is genuinely gravity-first, 120mm is the wrong tool — Allied build the 140mm FITZ for that brief, and we would rather point you at the right bike than sell you this one. For everything from the start line to the long Saturday loop on singletrack, the BC40 is the bike. Come and talk through the build.
THE FINER THINGS
MADE HERE
Allied is justifiably proud of its US-everything manufacturing approach, and the BC40 is a happy recipient of the brand's 'MADE HERE' mantra. In its brand statement, Allied makes a pleasing distinction between mechanized manufacturing and the skills, knowledge and intelligence that can only come from human heads, hearts and hands, arguing that people make bikes, not machines. Hear hear.
TWO PIECES, NO PENALTY
Integrated one-piece cockpits buy their weight savings with your fit options. Allied's DUET system refuses the trade: a 780mm bar and 50mm stem that together weigh 199 grams — territory most one-piece systems cannot reach — while keeping the adjustability of a traditional two-piece setup. Roll, height, width: all still yours to tune, which on a bike you will race and ride all day is exactly as it should be.
