“I’m a minimalist at heart,” explains Regroup Custom client and Time Scylon rider, Mark. “I don’t have a lot of stuff. I don’t have eight bikes; I have one bike to keep it simple. Still, every few years, I get an itch for a new bike. I don’t know what that is.” We might have an idea. Heads turn, hearts change, or at least, bikes do. And the last few years have seen more than marginal gains in respect of tech, fluidity, and connectivity. Feel. And that’s as good a segue as ever to talk about Mark’s new Time Scylon.

“All roads lead somewhere, right?” he says. “I have an older cousin over in California. He’s always been obsessed with European bike history and cycling. For him, Time holds a mystical fascination based on its history and technology. I’ve been cycling with real passion since I was twelve, and growing up, my cousin was kind of a mentor figure, and because of that, I think Time attained real significance to me, too.” Years down the road, when Mark felt the urge for a new bike, his fondness for Time was rekindled when he saw that we had started working with the brand, featuring its new Scylon road silhouette in the shop and on the site.

But before we get to the bike, there’s another layer to the story. “My wife, Lindsay and I had just got one of our daughters cycling,” he explains. “We gifted her my wife’s bike, so we actually needed two bikes. I find the idea of having a his-and-hers bike of the same brand really appealing. Like we’re on the same team!” He laughs. Mark opted for the Scylon road bike, and Lindsay, the brand’s Alpe d’Huez, enamored as they were with Time, and not just its history and what Mark’s mentor meant to him, but the individualism of a brand that still makes in-house at its home base, that breathes life into its bikes with a unique technology (more of that, here) and supreme ride feel.

The obvious question is, how does his Scylon ride? Mark lights up. “It feels like Kylo Ren’s ship in Star Wars!” he laughs. “It’s unbelievable. It sounds different, it looks different.” And on the road? “It holds its speed so well. My wife and I were on the flats the other day, going 27 mph and just chit-chatting. We weren’t even trying to go fast. I set a new personal best on a local mile-long climb. It just goes. No lag.”

For a man of minimalism, Mark chose Time’s Nude finish, a clearcoat over raw carbon that nevertheless takes on the light like a new layer, inheriting passing hues with a beguiling subtlety. And Lindsay? “As you guys know, she’s an artist. She carefully planned out her vision for the paint. It reflects her style and obsession with stripes. Adam and the team took that on and made it real. She’s very happy with how it came out.”

As are we. A brace of beautiful bikes for two passionate cyclists, brought together by a long-held flame to European cycling heritage. It doesn’t get much better than that.
