As we’ve seen at America’s big-ticket gravel races, gravel bike tire sizes are creeping up and up. For this and to open up some of the wilder passes of the world (we’re looking at you, Silk Road), 3T designed the Extrema Italia gravel bike with clearance for up to 57c tires - the same traction as a top-tier cross-country mountain bike. Of course, you don’t have to use all of that capacity, but it’s nice to know you could. You never really know where in the world you might ride next.
Another emerging trend in gravel bikes is a greater focus on aerodynamics. As 3T notes, “Balancing aerodynamic efficiency with the demands of rugged gravel terrain requires meticulous engineering. The challenge lies in optimizing the bike’s aerodynamics without compromising its ability to tackle variable surfaces.” To that end, 3T optimized the Extrema Italia around massive 29”/700c tires with 50-57mm WAM (Width-As-Measured).
To optimize the air hitting the Extrama, 3T created a downtube design that ‘cleans up the airflow mess’ as it travels over the front wheel and meets the frame. Big tires require big tubes, so the Extrema’s downtube measures 60mm wide behind the front tire and gets even wider as it nears the bottom bracket. 3T tells us that this redirects the airflow over the frame from the front wheel and shields the bottles for a complete aerodynamic system.
On top of that, the Extrema’s headtube boasts an elongated aero profile with an aggressive truncation at the back, creating a more angular front end that’s much narrower between the two headset bearings. These features create a seriously fast adventure bike, ready for anywhere you dream to ride.
While the Racemax Italia focuses on fast courses and tarmac/gravel mixed riding, the Extrema Italia is designed exactly as it sounds: for the toughest race courses and fast adventures.
